Words To AVOID

Words To AVOID

There are many words that can get you into trouble. But at first it seems that you are very close to a win. When you get ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 on the 2nd or 3rd word. In hard mode, these should be words to avoid.

First, lets look at the entire word list. These are ALL the words accepted by Wordle and WordPlay. There are 19 instances of ILLS like FILLS, GILLS, PILLS, etc. Ending up with ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 could make a win tough. Even the punt strategy may not help when there are 10+ options remaining.

Something that is hard to believe about the table above. With the exception of the -IGHT words, there are 0 words of these words in the solution list.

Hard to believe, I know.

I thought I made a mistake.

The curated Wordle list of 2,315 words excludes very common words.

It seems that all the -ILLS words were removed to prevent this problem. You will never get ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 with PILLS or FILLS. None of these words were included.

Same for -ACKS, BACKS, HACKS, LACKS, SACKS...

Same for -ANGS, BANGS, FANGS, GANGS, PANGS...

Same for -ESTS, JESTS, NESTS, PESTS, RESTS, TESTS, VESTS

Same for -INES, FINES, LINES, MINES, NINES, PINES, VINES, WINES

Now below, you will notice in the solution list table that 9 -IGHT words made the cut. The ones excluded seem appropriate. This reduces the problems words down to under 10. With less than 10 possibilities, this makes the punt strategy more useful.

For those listed above, there are also other words that can be entered. Here is the breakdown of the different options.

-IGHT - 9 solutions, 15 accepted
-OUND - 8 solutions, 9 accepted
-OWER - 7 solutions, 10 accepted
-ATCH - 7 solutions, 10 accepted
-ILLY - 6 solutions, 8 accepted
-AUNT - 6 solutions, 8 accepted
-ATTY - 6 solutions, 7 accepted
-ASTE - 6 solutions, 6 accepted

The recent WATCH Wordle solution caused many to lose their streaks. The two double-letter possibilities required more thought to use the punt strategy. The punt word had to start with a "C" or "H". CABIN or HERON were commonly used. I will discuss the screenshot below more tomorrow.

The New York Times definitely could change the solution list. They will not make any friends with 19 possibilities and about 8% of people playing hard mode.

Have a great week!
