For this exercise, I will only look at the Wordle curated solution list. For a future post, I will compare the entire accepted word list.
I am not looking at the specific vowel. Instead only the number of vowels contained in the 5-letter word solution.
The solution list contains 2,315 5-letter words.
Here is the breakdown:
The most common situation is a word with exactly 2 vowels. This is also the more likely than any other vowel number. There will be 2 vowels 57.84% of the time. Exactly 1 vowel will be in the word 31.66% of the time.
A big takeaway from this, is the 89.5% of the time there will be 1 or 2 vowels. Yes, vowels are important. Vowels are a subgroup of 5 letters out of 26. There will be at least 1 vowel more than 99% of the time.
I think it will be interesting to discuss the unlikely situations. There are 13 words in the word list with NO vowels. I will list them below, try to think of them before you scroll down. This would be that 1 out of 178 games will have no vowels. Currently, we are at game number 263 and this has not happened yet.
There are also 3 words that contain 4 vowels in the word list. There are 29 words with 4 vowels that will be accepted. Interesting stat, 26 out of 29 words with 4 vowels did not make the solution list. There really aren't any common words omitted, except for ADIEU.
That means for everyone that starts with ADIEU, they will NEVER get it right on the first try. Here is the list of the 3 words that made it to the solution list.
AUDIO - sound, especially when recorded, transmitted, or reproduced
EERIE - strange or frightening
QUEUE - a line or sequence awaiting their turn
I'm sure these definitions may not be necessary. Here is the entire list of 4 vowel words in the wordlist. Probably only OUIJA would be acceptable to add for a solution.
AUDIO*, EERIE*, QUEUE*, AALII, ADIEU, AECIA, AERIE, AIDOI, AINEE, AIOLI, AIYEE, AQUAE, AREAE, AULOI, AURAE, AUREI, BOOAI, COOEE, LOOIE, LOUIE, MIAOU, OIDIA, OORIE, OUIJA, OURIE, URAEI, ZOAEA, ZOEAE, ZOOEA
