As promised, here is the 3rd installment for 4 🟩 words with possibilities.
For this round, I am looking at the situation 🟩🟩⬛🟩🟩. I actually was surprised at the number of issues that could occur. Looking at the table below, you can see the potential losing situations.
I made the words without an "S" at the end bold, for which there are 5.
CO-ED, HO-ED, RA-ED, LA-ER, and LA-ED
Avoiding these situations, especially in hard mode, is the best strategy. If these situations are uncovered in the 4th round, you may be out of options. Using a two word open will reduce your available guesses, should this situation arise. I have added a few game examples below to show what options are left to win.
HINT: It appears that all the words from the table were excluded in the solution listing.
Some of the worst situations I could find with words in the solution list are:
PA-ER: With solutions PACER, PAGER, PALER, PAPER, PARER, PATER, PAVER, PAWER, PAYER
WA-ER: With solutions WADER, WAFER, WAGER, WAKER, WALER, WATER, WAVER, WAXER
RI-ER: With solutions RICER, RIDER, RIFER, RIMER, RIPER, RISER, RIVER
FI-ER: With solutions FIBER, FIFER, FILER, FINER, FIRER, FIVER, FIXER
The left side assumes hard mode. Which means you have no option but to guess. When down to 2-3 guesses with 5+ options, it is best to go with the most commonly known words. Avoid the more obscure guesses. Essentially, you are at the mercy of the solution list. This list was created by a human and is only supposed to included more known words.
On the right-side, I employ the punt strategy in easy mode. You can see that the letters used in the punt word tries to eliminate 3-5 guesses. This will narrow down the remaining options, or reveal the solution.
The punt strategy needs to consider the double-letter possibility. For example, for CO_ED you will need to use the double letter "in position" to effectively discover or eliminate.
